Location type

Bridge

Name and dates

Stonehouse Viaduct (1905-1968)

Opened on the Mid Lanark Lines (Caledonian Railway).

Description

This was a double track eight span girder viaduct crossing the River Avon. However, it only ever carried one track as the line was never doubled.

This was the longest viaduct in Scotland at 457 yards (1,371 ft) long . It followed a gentle curve. The maximum height was 158 ft over the Avon Water.

The girders were removed in 1984, unlike the nearby Broomhill Viaduct which retains its girders.
