Name and dates

Containerbase Junction (1971-1991)

Opened on the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway.

Description

This junction opened with a new line to serve the Greenock Container Port, built on the site of Greenock Princes Pier station in 1969.

This junction and line opened in 1971, a single track new link from the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway to the Garvel Dock Branch Junction on the former Inchgreen Branch of the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway. The Greenock and Ayrshire Railway Inchgreen Branch (closed 1961) re-opened to Cartsburn Junction and from there followed the former main line of the route (closed 1966) to Greenock Princes Pier.

The new line and re-opened portions were reinstated as a single track line.

The line was out of use by 1985 and officially closed in 1991. Track remained until around 2010.
