This is a single platform station, the platform erected on the south side of the single track line. The station is immediately west of Cartsburn Tunnel.
The line was originally single track and a second line was added, through a second tunnel, to the south of the existing line. This westbound line was lifted. The platform is on the site of this lifted line and the disused single bore tunnel still exists, the portal of which can be seen from the station.
To the west, from Berryards Junction, the Overton Paper Mill was reached via a reversing spur. Just beyond this was Upper Greenock, a station which Whinhill effectively replaces.
