Description

This is a single platform station on a loop built alongside the railway running up from Dalrymple Junction to Chalmerston Loading Pad (out of use at present, 2018).

The station is located on a short section of line which runs from the formerly NCB repair shop and locomotive shed to the north west, to the station, then to a connection with the mainline and continues with a long parallel siding beyond. The connection is made just beyond the change over ownership from Network Rail to the formerly Scottish Coal owned line.

The station, sheds and sidings constitute the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre.

This is the second site, the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre [1st] was originally at Minnivey to the south east and relocated here in 2002 to the former Dalmellington Iron Works which closed in 1931, became a centre for coal mining and ultimately closed to processing opencast coal in 1986.

A heritage centre was established at the former iron works site by the Dalmellington and District Conservation Trust.

Meanwhile, track was relaid from here to Minnivey in 1988 to serve the Chalmerston opencast site.

Sadly, with funding cut, the Heritage Centre closed in 2005 but the railway centre has remained in operation, indeed the group now owns many of the buildings it occupies.

This 'living museum' is run by volunteers and operates steam and diesel locomotives and a unique operational fireless locomotive.
