William Baird and Co, of the Gartsherrie Iron Works, developed iron ore mines, an iron ore processing plant and a railway to connect them on the Isle of Raasay. The plant was located above a pier for exporting the ore.
The plant was at the south end of the railway and ore was crushed and roasted here. To the north were the mines Inverarish Ore Mine 1 and Inverarish Ore Mine 2. There were four calcinating kilns and a large concrete bin connected by conveyor to the pier, Suisnish Pier.
Construction was largely in concrete and as a result much remains intact.
The works and line closed around 1920.
The railway was cable operated.
