This works was owned by the Gartverrie Fireclay Co Ltd. It was north of Coatbridge, in the east of Gartsherrie. The works was served by a branch from the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway.
This branch passed under the Caledonian Railway line between Gartsherrie North Junction and Gartsherrie South Junction. This low bridge required locomotives with short chimneys.
The works had its own standard gauge locomotive (a vertically boilered Alexander Chaplin & Co locomotive previously used for the building of Fraserburgh Harbour. It was in use from 1885 to 1932. In addition the various pits had 2 ft railways worked by narrow gauge locomotives.
