Name and dates

Haughhead Colliery Signal Box (1887-1960)

Opened on the Clydesdale Junction Railway.

Description

This signal box was west of Uddingston, over the Clyde Viaduct [Uddingston]. It was the junction for Haughhead Colliery [Uddingston], to the north, and Blantyreferme Colliery, to the south. Both were served by short mineral lines approached from the west. Haughhead Colliery [Uddingston] had exchange sidings next to the main line, on its north side.

When the Clyde Viaduct [Uddingston] was replaced in 1903 the signal box was the western extent of the deviation. The deviated line was immediately to the north of the original line and absorbed the site of the exchange sidings.

Blantyreferme Colliery's brick works remained open after the colliery closed in 1962 and its siding remained in use. The box closed in 1960 when replaced by the new power box at Newton.
