New Hendon to Penshaw branch opened. Uses new terminus at Sunderland Fawcett Street.

Hendon station built 880 yards south to the replace former Sunderland station which was on the Town Moor just west of the South Dock locomotive shed.

Sunderland [LR] station (just south of Hendon station) closed and diverted to Hendon station.

Hendon station closed on opening of new Sunderland station.

New line from Ryhope Grange Junction to new Sunderland central station and from Fawcett Street opened. Hendon and Fawcett Street stations closed. Line extended north to cross the River Wear to connect at Monkwearmouth. The new station had two island platforms with arched overall roof (which was destroyed in World War II).

Having been eclipsed by the Freightliner service, the Condor conflat container service ends. This ran between Glasgow Gushetfaulds Freightliner Terminal and London Hendon, and the Glasgow to Birmingham Aston.
