Station

Name and dates

Inveruglas (1945-1950)

Opened on the West Highland Railway.

Description

This was a one platform workman's halt, with the platform on the east side of a passing loop. The West Highland Railway is still open but there is no station here today. The site was on the west side of Loch Lomond north of the Inveruglas Water and just west of Upper Inveruglas farm. There were three sidings in the yard with a loading bank, approached from the north, on the west side. This halt was built for halt for the Loch Sloy Hydroscheme (construction of Loch Sloy Power Station (at Inveruglas) and Loch Sloy Dam). The workmen were both civilians and prisoners-of-war who were brought north from Faslane Platform (a further platform was built at Glen Falloch Platform). A large encampment of Nissen huts was on the east side of the line (the concrete bases of these buildings can still be seen in the field to the east of the line today).

The two storey flat roofed signal box located on the platform opened in 1946 and closed in 1956. This box was on the east side of the line and had a flat roof. The crossing of passenger trains here was not intended.

Just to the north of the halt the line passes over the pipes and maintenance inclined railway for Loch Sloy Power Station, Inveruglas. A quarter mile deviation was opened to cross the bridge.

Local

There is no station here today. There is a bus stop on the nearby A82. Summer ferries operating on Loch Lomond run to Inversnaid Hotel on the east side of the Loch and south to Tarbet Pier on the west side. The north portion of the Three Lochs Way footpath connects Arrochar and Tarbet station to Inveruglas. It may cycled but is narrow, rough and steep in places.

The ruin of Inveruglas Castle is on an island just offshore. To the west Loch Sloy Dam may be approached on foot along private roads.

Inveruglas Construction Camp

During the railway's construction there was a pier here for materials on Loch Lomond. This was the 3rd navvy camp from the south.

There was a rail served gravel pit on the west side of the line, this later became the site of the goods sidings of the hydroscheme associated station.
