Around 300 ships were built at Kingston, on the west side of the mouth of the River Spey, for many years. The shipyard and town were developed by shipbuilders from Kingston-upon-Hull. Timber, which had been floated down the river, was used. The yard was on the north side of the town. With the changing nature of the coastline and lagoons in the area some of the site has been lost.
