Name and dates

Limerigg Signal Box

Opened on the Slamannan Railway.

Description

This signal box was at the west end of a loop which ran east to North Monkland Junction. There were a considerable number of mineral lines in the area. The box was on the north side of the loop. This loop was one of many sections of the Slamannan Railway doubled. The line was on, approximately, a south west to north east alignment.

To the west was Longrigg Siding, which gave access to the colliery line running south east from the line. This served the Longrigg Colliery, Longrigg Colliery Pit No 4 amongst others. By the junction were the colliery engineering works.

To the east was Limerigg Junction from which a colliery line ran south east. This line served the Limerigg Colliery, with Balquhatstone Colliery Pit No 1 and others. There was an exchange yard at the junction, approached from the junction, and a single lead connection with a cross over.

The signal box closed in 1926. The line closed to passengers in 1930 and completely in 1949.

The formations remain, partly absorbed into farmland.
