Line opened, with no authorisation act. Wayleaves were used, rather than land purchase. There were several inclined planes: Waldridge Incline, Edenhill Incline, Twizell Incline, Stanley Incline, Loud Bank Incline, Hownes Gill Inclines, Nanny Mayor's Incline, Waskerley Incline and Weatherhill Incline.

Nanny Mayor's Incline closed, replaced by the Nanny Mayor's Incline Deviation (Stockton and Darlington Railway) (and reversal at Burnhill Junction).
