Newmilns Viaduct (1896-1964)

Opened on the Darvel Branch (Glasgow and South Western Railway).

Description

This disused long and low double track viaduct is east of the former Newmilns station on the 1896 extension to Darvel. Its west end is west of the River Irvine and it continued east over The Green to east of Union Street. Only one line was laid, the eastbound.

The viaduct is 1035 ft long and consists of 26 sandstone arches. The track level was about 34 ft. The viaduct is in stone with blue brick.

A few arches have been converted into workshops.

The line closed in 1964. The trackbed is not normally accessible and is tree lined.
