The Highland Railway's Station Hotel is on the south side of Inverness station square. Inverness station's entrance is on the east side and former Highland Railway offices on the north side. It was originally that built in 1855 by Joseph Mitchell (opening 1856). The station had direct access to the circulating area and platforms.
The hotel was enlarged in 1875, and again in 1898 with further alterations in 1958.
In the square is a memorial statue to those soldiers of the Queen's Own Highlanders killed in the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 (erected 1893).
The hotel was renamed the Royal Highland in May 2000.
