This junction was east of Plains station. It served the siding to Stepends Colliery and Stepends Brick Works. (These were connected by a long aerial ropeway to Ardenrigg Colliery Pit No 6 to the south east.)
Departure from the siding was to the west. It was reached by reversal from the westbound line and was located on the south side of the line.
The junction shared a signal box, Stepends Signal Box, with Plains Junction which was to the east.
The junction was named for the nearby farm.
