Stonefield Castle Hotel
This hotel was previously a large private house built for John Campbell, 4th of Stonefield, to the designs of architect William Henry Playfair. Construction was completed in 1837, and the building has been extended several times since. It is located on the east side of the Kintyre peninsula overlooking Barmore Island in Loch Fyne. The castle had its own coal quay on the shore of the loch.
The grounds are noted for their collection of rhododendrons, collected by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (surgeon, botanist, explorer and plant collector, of University of Glasgow and Kew Gardens). He was accompanied by Dr A Campbell. On Hooker's return from the Himalayas in 1851 the garden was set out for his friend George Campbell of Stonefield.
A hotel from 1949.
The coastal steamer Arran [III] was stranded on the rocks to the east of Barmore Island on 31 December 1932. Its broken up remains are still there, submerged.
The name Stonefield is a anglicisation of Achnacloich/Achadh na Cloiche, also owned by the Campbell family.
