Loco shed

Name and dates

Strome Ferry Shed (1870-1897)

Description

This two road timber shed was east of Strome Ferry station, on the landward side of the line. It dated from the opening of the railway when the station was a terminus. The shed was approached by reversing from the goods yard, the siding passing over a turntable before splitting into two roads to enter the shed.

The shed was accidentally burned down in 1872 and was replaced. This shed lasted until 1897 when the line was extended to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Banquet in a locomotive shed

To celebrate the opening of the Dingwall and Skye Railway a special train brought invited guests to Strome Ferry on the 7th of August 1870. This was followed by a return sea trip to Plockton.

Afterwards a banquet was served to the guests in the Strome Ferry Shed.

The line opened to the public on the 19th.
