Name and dates

Towiemore Halt (1924-1968)

Opened on the Keith and Dufftown Railway.

Description

This was a small single platform halt. The platform was in timber. The platform was on the north side of the line. The station building was a grounded carriage.

Drummuir Lane Kilns Siding opened here in 1863. It was renamed Botriphnie in the 1880s, a signal box 'Botriphnie Siding' opening in 1883.

The box closed in 1890. It reopened in 1895 with the building of Towiemore Distillery on the site of the lime kilns. The box was closed and replaced by a ground frame in 1896.

The siding then served Towiemore Distillery from 1897/98.

The LNER provided a passenger service from about 1924 for distillery staff.

The distillery was short lived and closed in 1930, but its maltings survived. The halt became public in 1937.

By the platform was a bothy, formerly the Botriphnie Siding signal box.

There were sidings on the north side of the line, accessed from the east. This was originally a limekiln siding but was expanded with a series of sidings when Towiemore Distillery opened. The siding closed in 1964.

The line is now in heritage use and hints of the former platform remain.
