This William Baird & Co pit was on the north bank of the Forth and Clyde Canal, east of Twechar Swing Bridge. It was served by the Bairds of Gartshore's Railway, being approached the north. Its bing was to the north.
Opened in 1865 it was initially an ironstone pit it became a coal pit for most of its life. Underground it was linked to Gartshore Colliery Pit No 10 which was on the south bank of the canal. In the Second World War it was linked to Dumbreck Colliery underground, providing an escape route for both should it be needed after bombing. It closed in 1964.
Although coal left by the railway it was also carried by the (Caledonian Railway owned) Forth and Clyde Canal to Dawsholm Quay serving the nearby gas works.
