Glasgow's annual carnival was displaced from place to place over time. In the 1890s there was a Switchback Railway on the east side of Vinegarhill Street.
This was relocated to the west side of Vinegarhill Street by the time of the 1912 Ordnance Survey map, formerly the site of the Camlachie Foundry and later Camlachie Steel Works. By this time there was one linear and one oval Switchback Railway.
The name Switchback may have, with its proximity, applied to the Caledonian Railway's Glasgow Lines, better known as The Switchback (Caledonian Railway).
