Camlachie Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

Camlachie Signal Box

Opened on the Glasgow and Coatbridge Branch (North British Railway).

Description

This signal box was to the west of Parkhead North station and controlled its western approach. The box was on the north side of the line. The Switchback (Caledonian Railway) crossed overhead just to the east.

To the east the box controlled (from north to south) access to the station, goods lines (a small yard) to the south of the station, the western approach to Parkhead Shed and two points of access to the Parkhead Forge.

To the west was Netherfield Chemical Works, the approach to Bellgrove East Junction and Camlachie Goods.

Between Parkhead and Bellgrove the line grew to have four through lines and various sidings. At the Bellgrove the goods lines were to the north and passenger lines to the south but by Parkhead the situation was reversed.

The signal box was replaced in 1907 (line quadrupling with the addition of the goods lines and yard) and was resignalled in preparation for electrification in 1960. It closed in 1970.

This is now simply a two track electrified line.
