Whalley Abbey is on the east side of the viaduct. A gateway crosses over the The Sands, a road which passes under the viaduct. The viaduct's arches on either side of the crossing of this road are infilled with decorative brickwork. The viaduct also crosses over the abbey's former defensive trench.
