Name and dates

Windmillcroft Quay Depot (1840-1850)

Opened on the Polloc and Govan Railway.

Description

This quayside depot was on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow at Windmillcroft Quay.

Coal was exported from here between 1840 and 1850 via an extension of the Polloc and Govan Railway from Eglinton Basin (of the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal) to the Clyde. The approach to the quay was down was is now West Street.

It was very much eclipsed by the opening of the General Terminus and Glasgow Harbour Railway to the far superior new facilities at General Terminus in 1849.

The disused line was lifted in 1867.
