Workington Bridge

Location type

Station

Name and dates

Workington Bridge (1847-1951)

Opened on the Cockermouth and Workington Railway.

Description

This was a two platform station west of the approach road to Workington Bridge over the River Derwent, the road crossed on a bridge. The goods yard was to the east of the road.

To the east of the station was Workington Bridge Junction where the Cockermouth and Workington Railway was met by a spur from the Cleator and Workington Railway such that the trains could run south to Workington Central.

To the west the line passed under the Cleator and Workington Railway and joined the Whitehaven Junction Railway at Derwent Junction, a south facing junction, which allowed trains to run south to Workington. A further line was opened running west to Lonsdale Dock when it opened.

The station did not open with the line but opened to make the north bank of the River Derwent more accessible to the south bank.

The station site has been cleared and is now partly Northside Road.
