Name and dates

Yoker Power Station (1905-1976)

Served by the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway.

Description

This coal fired power station was located to the south of the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway which served it, via a reversal. Yoker Ferry station was to the immediate west. It was also accessible from the marshalling yard of Rothesay Dock. The site was bounded to the south by the River Clyde.

The power station had its own locomotives which were chiefly employed in bringing coal from the yard at Rothesay Dock. One has survived - Barclay No. 2047 0-4-0ST at Rothesay Dock, Clydebank in the 1970s. The locomotive was built 1937 and is now to be found on the Plym Valley Railway. A battery electric locomotive by English Electric was also used.

The power station was opened by the Clyde Valley Electric Power Co Ltd in 1905. In 1927 when the National Grid was established it was a 'selected station', one of those used to generate the base load of the network.

Closure was around 1976. The site was cleared and remained vacant until relatively recently.

A prominent landmark, it appeared in the background of many photographs such as those taken on the south bank of the Clyde at Renfrew Wharf.
