Borders rail link could cut 530,000 road trips [Scotsman]

THE new Borders rail line is set to cut car journey numbers by more than half-a-million every year, according to a new report. The latest analysis of the business case for the £300 million project to reopen the Waverley route from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, near Galashiels, calculated the rail link will boost tourism and cut road accidents due to fewer car journeys.

A class 40 locomotive takes the 09.20 Carlisle - Edinburgh Waverley north through Stow station in December 1968. The locomotive is passing through the area currently (2007) occupied by the kitchen of the house which was subsequently built on this spot. [See image 14414]

D8529 stands on the Waverley Line with a coal train alongside Lady Victoria Colliery, c. late 60s/early 70s. The pit officially closed in December 1971, with the last of the Claytons also withdrawn at that time. The remaining section of the Waverley route back to Millerhill finally closed in mid 1972.
