More than 3,700 new train carriages, which represent an investment of £9.3 billion, will be delivered onto the UK rail network over the next four years. The figure was announced by Rail Delivery Group (RDG) chief executive Paul Plummer following analysis of new train orders. The research takes into account the 866 new intercity train carriages from Hitachi for the East Coast and Great Western main lines and the 594 commuter carriages being built by Bombardier for Crossrail. There are also large rolling stock orders expected in the near future for the Northern and TransPennine routes, Merseyrail and East Anglia. [From Richard Buckby]
