Manchester's Nightingale hospital ready for first North West patients after just 14 days [Blackpool Gazette]

NHS Nightingale Hospital North West is equipped to receive up to 750 coronavirus patients from across the region who do not need intensive care but still require treatment.
Construction started on Saturday March 28, with the entire main central hall of the former Manchester Central railway station, 10,000 square metres in total, designated as bed space.

Opened by the Cheshire Lines Committee in 1880, Manchester Central station closed to rail traffic in 1969. The listed building was eventually reborn as the G-Mex exhibition and conference centre in 1986. The former station is shown here on 7 July 2008 having been renamed Manchester Central earlier this year.

View over Manchester Central from the Beetham Tower on 28 September 2009. Closed to rail traffic in 1969 the old CLC station was subsequently refurbished and relaunched as the G-Mex Conference and Exhibition Centre in 1986 before regaining its original identity in 2008. The Midland Hotel stands opposite the far end of the building and a Metrolink tram can be seen running past on the right.
