The Alston bay at Haltwhistle looking east towards the signalbox in February 2013. The trackbed now forms an unofficial footpath around the back of the station. My last visit to Haltwhistle was in 1976 when I caught a train from this platform shortly before the Alston branch closed. On the other side of the still used waiting room is the Carlisle platform. A Newcastle to Glasgow (via Dumfries) service draws in to the staggered platform at Haltwhistle. Although this is a Scotrail Sprinter working through (156501 from Corkerhill) the Carlisle to Newcastle leg of the journey is operated by and shown in the timetable as a Northern Service.
