Key milestone reached for new Northumberland railway line [Berwick Advertiser]

The latest major milestone on the Northumberland Line has been reached after the Government approved a key part of the authorisation process. A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) was needed to authorise the closure of level crossings, the acquisition and use of land, and certain works at key points along the route.

Weed-infested platform remains, minus all buildings, at Ashington station, Northumberland, closed with the line in 1964, looking south towards Newcastle, on 15th June 2018. A news report on 23rd January 2021 stated that £34 million funding has been found for the restoration of passenger services. The current estimate is an opening date in 2025. Lets hope so but it does sound a little ambitious, especially with the dreadful ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Having reversed at Newsham, UK Railtours' excursion is now returning north to North Blyth, seen here on Bedlington level crossing and about to again pass through the disused station, closed on 2nd November 1964, in pouring rain on 7th April 2018. Bedlington is due for reopening now that funding for the resumption of passenger services on the line to Ashington was at long last granted in January 2021.
