Crinan Canal: Concerns over winter closure [Herald Scotland]

Date: 02/10/2023

A remarkable feat of 18th century engineering, the Crinan Canal has provided a shortcut through spectacular scenery for navigators and a delightful spot for tourists for more than 220 years. However, a storm is now brewing over plans to close its western end for almost seven months for winter repairs, spanning traditionally busy October and Easter holiday periods, leaving boats stuck and local businesses in turmoil.

'Birthday Boat'. Clyde Puffer VIC 32's cruising season is split into three parts with the first third spent in the Firth of Clyde area. This is followed by 6 weeks based in Crinan sailing the Sound of Jura and the Inner Hebrides. The latter part of the season is spent navigating the Caledonian Canal. Transiting the Crinan Canal between Ardrishaig and Crinan, VIC32 is seen leaving Lock 6 at Cairnbaan on 9th June 2023, en route to a weekend of 80th birthday celebrations at its home base. Elevated view of the Crinan Canal and Bellanoch Basin on 3rd November 2022. The very low water level in the canal, and the normally busy basin, was because it had been drained for major works around the lock flights, including replacement of several gates. The scenic waterway winds around the hillside and then passes left to right just above the sea. After passing the white cottage it turns to go around the headland, beyond which is Crinan Basin. The land visible beyond the Crinan headland is the island of Scarba, and between there and (out of sight to the left) Jura is the famous Corryvreckan Whirlpool.
