The Freyung terminus of the Iltztalbahn is seen here on 21st June, with a single-unit Waldbahn railcar soon to depart for Passau. The passenger service is summer weekends only, and the photographer was unable to establish how this operation - and the branch itself (with no evident freight traffic) - manages to survive.
Stafford: Viewed from a passing train on 21 June 2016, Stafford No.5 signalbox at the north end of the station. Since this photo was taken the box has been demolished.

Wilderswil: PCBTL?** Schynige Platte rack locomotive No.13 Matten, dating from 1914, engages in some leisurely shunting at the SPB Wilderswil depot, alongside the station on 21st June 2016. As is common rack railway practice the locomotives are not coupled to the passenger coaches but simply push them up the mountain using the dumb buffer seen here. The locos are single ended as going up the mountain they are driven from a compartment in the passenger coach. (** Pantograph considerably bigger than locomotive)
Salisbury: A SWT service to Waterloo formed by 159105 departs from Salisbury on 21 June 2016.
Rotenegg: SPB No.20 Gsteigwiler (Edelweiss) propels an ascending train away from the (to UK eyes) unfortunately titled Rotenegg loop towards the tunnel of the same name. The lady seen by the loop points was the guard of the descending train who changed them after No.20 had cleared and then ran down the loop to change the lower set and finally rejoin the train after it was clear. Her enthusiasm was typical of staff all over the Swiss systems.
Schynige Platte: The summit station at Schynige Platte (6520'), with veteran electric No.61 Enzian waiting in the platform prior to descending again to Wilderswill. From this station there are views across to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountain range.
Bradford-on-Avon: Looking along the Bath bound platform at Bradford-on-Avon on 21 June 2016. It isn't just the platform bench that has a GWR feel to it.
Stoke Gifford: The new Hitachi maintenance facility for the Class 800 IEP trains at Stoke Gifford seen from a passing train between Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Parkway on 21 June 2016. Whilst there are several sidings at this (east) end of the site, further west there is a large building offering covered facilities.

Wilderswil: One of the oddest railway vehicles I have ever seen. I tend to think of snow ploughs as big heavy vehicles being propelled at significant speed to clear drifts. Bearing in mind the Schynige Platt Bahn is an entirely rack railway, I can't imagine how this little lightweight unit, operating at a sedate trundle, (max 10 kph) makes much impression on a big drift - but what do I know? Wilderswil Depot on 21st June 2016.
Wilderswil: The Schynige Platte Bahn rack railway trains and Berner Oberland Bahn services run on parallel tracks for some distance after they leave Wilderswil before the little cog railway trains diverge and begin the steep climb. This view of BOB unit 313, approaching Wilderswil from Grindelwald, was taken from a SPB service that it had just overtaken on 21st June 2016. The SPB is entirely rack driven with ancient locomotives [[55753]] but the modern BOB trains are mainly adhesion with rack sections.
West Kilbride: Today (21/6/16) little has changed at West Kilbride. Chu Chu's is apparently unsold and there's been no progress with the building. This plaque on the wall is sadly 8 years out of date now.
Schynige Platte: Beginning the descent from the 6520' summit station at Schynige Platte is He2/2 locomotive No. 61 Enzian with two passenger coaches and an empty goods wagon. The line is 4.5 miles long and winds down 4614' to the junction station of Wilderswill where it connects with the Bernese Oberland Bahn (BOB) trains. This rack railway was built in 1893 and electrified in 1914 with all locomotives in use being over 100 years old.
Liverpool Lime Street: The arches at Lime Street were revealed again when the former Concourse House tower and shops were demolished some years ago during the station refurbishment work, which also included the plaza seen here on a hot Midsummer's Day in 2017.

Forres East Junction: Forres will soon have not only a new station (with a loop actually in the station) but also a considerably longer loop. this is the view west to Forres East Junction and the Waterford Road level crossing from the east. Waterford Road LC will be swept away in favour of a new overbridge alongside the new station.
Corrib Viaduct: Remains of bridge on the north side of the River Corrib at Galway which carried the former Connemara Railway from Galway to Clifden across the river, seen here on 21st June 2017, looking towards Clifden. This 48 mile line was opened by the Midland Great Western Railway on 1st January 1895 and closed by the Great Southern Railway of Ireland on 27th April 1935. Since my visit, a short reopening project has started to take shape at the former intermediate station at Maam Cross.
Bidston: Time capsule? Modern seats yet outside the window ... oh hang on ...
Corrib Viaduct: Remains of the viaduct that carried the one-time Connemara Railway from Galway to Clifden over the River Corrib at Galway, seen here, looking from north to south, on 21st June 2017. The line opened in 1895 and closed in 1935. According to a News item posted on 20th June 2020 on the Connemara Railway website (www.connemararailway.ie), a scheme to restore the former Maam Cross station, roughly midway along the line, and lay a short section of track on which to bring trains back to the Connemara region after 85 years, is still to go ahead despite the current situation with the coronavirus pandemic.
Forres East Junction: This is the view east from the level crossing by the former Forres East Junction showing works to build a new longer loop at Forres. Note the beginnings of the doubling of this bridge, on the left, which will carry two tracks. Beyond the bridge a new track has been laid on the left alongside the existing running line.
Edinburgh Waverley: DRS 68022 Resolution has just arrived in Waverley at the head of a morning commuter service from Fife. It is only 16 hours since I last saw it heading the other way and since then it has overnighted in Motherwell.
Forres East Junction: Forres East Signal Box, looking east. The box looks out on a large pile of new sleepers - part of the scheme which will soon see it superfluous and swept away.
Forres East Junction: View west towards the station from the level crossing which formerly approached Forres goods. The new station and loop are being developed to the right on the site of the original station.
Forres East Junction: Stairs by the East box at Forres on 21 June 2017. On the right are the signal box access steps, to the left those for catching tablets from westbound trains, with the equivalent for eastbound trains across the tracks. In the background are the works associated with the new station and loop.
James Street: Perhaps not one of the most interesting station buildings I have photographed, but busy and well maintained after its recent reurbishment at platform level.
Forres East Junction: View of the level crossing at the former Forres East Junction in June 2017, before alteration. The view looks north.
Abergele and Pensarn: View from a passing train of Abergele and Pensarn where the westbound platform was recently built out onto the old down loop to reach the down fast.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Ongoing work on the new overhead cables as part of the delayed EGIP scheme in June 2017.
Liverpool Lime Street: Platforms 8 and 9 at Lime Street in June 2017. Off to the left behind the partition, work has started to construct two new platforms – a mere 8 years or so after new buildings were erected in the former cab road area. The temporary Virgin first class lounge currently situated near the station entrance at least has a toilet, so Liverpool Virgin passengers are spared the inconvenience suffered by those waiting in the lounge at Glasgow Central.
Inverkeithing Central Junction: 60085 passes Inverkeithing Central Junction with Aberdeen - Oxwellmains cement empties on 21 June.
Queens Park: 314201 at Queens Park on a Cathcart Circle service on 21 June 2018.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: A southbound service on the Borders Railway photographed on Borthwick Bank during the morning of 21 June 2018. Half a mile away around the curve on the down side of the line stood Borthwick Bank signal box and, opposite, the sidings at Birky Side, once used by St Margaret's shed as an ash disposal point see image [[19390]].
Birchden Junction: The driver of the first Spa Valley service of the day from Eridge to Tunbridge Wells West (hauled by 33201) is Chris MacRae. Chris is originally from Clarkston and is also the Chairman of the railway company. 21st June 2018.
Groombridge: BRC&W Type 3 33201 is the 'tail' on a Spa Valley service to Tunbridge Wells West slowing into Groombridge station on 21st June 2018.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: The longest day. ScotRail 158734 negotiates the sweeping reverse curves of Borthwick Bank during the climb southwards from Gorebridge towards Falahill summit on a glorious summer morning. The train is the 0931 Edinburgh Waverley - Tweedbank and the date is 21 June 2018.
Stoneywood: A photograph of the extensive rail works near Bankhead at the former Stoneywood station site. This view looks north. The extensive soil nailing and embankment reinforcement is evident. It looks fairly brutal, how did they manage to have double track before without this civil engineering?
Whitecraigs: Whitecraigs looking particularly fine in 2018.
Stoneywood: The view looking south away from the former Stoneywood station site. The extensive soil nailing and embankment reinforcement is evident. It looks fairly brutal, how did they manage to have double track before without this civil engineering?
Bamber Bridge: Having missed the outward journey of the SSE in the morning (by less than a minute), I had to make do with an evening shot of the tour returning west on 21 June 2018. To add to the disappointment the tour had been scheduled for a pair of Class 33s but a problem with one of the locos resulted in a late substitution of a Class 37. Of course the Class 33 was on the front on the outward trip so I missed out on it leading as well. At least it was mid summer's day so there was just enough light to photograph as the train passed at 2135 hrs.
Cardross: Land of the Midnight Sun, almost. The southbound sleeper leaves Cardross.
Birchden Junction: Secondman's view (from BRC&W Type 3 No. 33201) of the former Birchden Junction on 21st June 2018. The Uckfield branch diverges left towards Oxted and London, while the loco and train turn eastwards towards Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells West. The two single-track lines today have no physical connection, although the Spa Valley line actually runs over the Network Rail solum from its terminus at Eridge (where there is a cross-footbridge connection to Uckfield services) to this former junction. (Cab ride courtesy of Spa Valley Railway)
Newtongrange: A southbound 158 on the Borders Railway runs under the bridge carrying the A7 to emerge at Newtongrange station on a bright and sunny 21 June 2018.
Springburn: 66736 hauls the alumina train for Fort William through Springburn on 21 June.
Tunbridge Wells West: View from the cab approaching the Spa Valley Railway terminus at Tunbridge Wells West on 21st June 2018. The imposing original London, Brighton & South Coast Railway station can be seen in the middle distance and the former engine shed to the left. The line originally continued ahead to Tunbridge Wells Central, but was the victim of a short-sighted late closure in 1985.
Sighthill West Junction: 365523 heads away from Sighthill West Junction with a Shields - Eastfield transfer.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: 365517 at Glasgow Queen Street with a training run to Linlithgow.
West Kilbride: The station building at West Kilbride is being repainted by Scotrail (listed building consent applied for) but sadly still seems unused. 21st June 2018.
Tunbridge Wells West: David Spaven indulges a boyhood fantasy at Tunbridge Wells West on 21st June 2018. 33201 (delivered 1962) was one of a sub-class built to narrower dimensions to negotiate tunnels on the Tonbridge-Hastings line. Sister loco 33207 is still in main line service with West Coast Railways. (Photo: Chris MacRae)
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: A northbound service on the Borders Railway between Tynehead and Fushiebridge on a bright and sunny 21 June 2018. The train is passing through the heavily reinforced cutting on Borthwick Bank and has just passed below Thorniehill Bridge from which the photograph was taken.
Eridge: Swapping steam and diesel loco positions on top and tail workings between Eridge and Tunbridge Wells West involves some rather complex shunting north of the two Spa Valley platforms at Eridge station (where there is no rounding loop). Visiting Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 0-6-0 No. 52322 and resident 33201 are seen here on 21st June 2018.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: The 0859 Tweedbank - Edinburgh drops down Borthwick Bank in the morning sunshine on 21 June 2018 making for its next scheduled stop at Gorebridge.
Kilpatrick: 320417 draws away from Kilpatrick station on 21st June 2018.
Glasgow Central: 380 022, 380 020 and 380 016 meet at Glasgow Central on 21st June 2018.
Kilpatrick: 156485 leads a three set combination through Kilpatrick on the 21st June 2018. The train is the 10.10 from Mallaig to Glasgow Queen Street, .
Groombridge: The Spa Valley Railway's delightful Groombridge station, seen on 21st June, looking west. The platform and buildings are all modern replicas, to replace the original station building (still extant) behind the photographer.
Groombridge: Token exchange at Groombridge on 21st June 2018 as 33201 passes the signal box en route to Eridge. The original LB&SCR station building can just be seen beyond the overbridge.
Springburn: 365523 passes platform 2 at Springburn on its way from Shields Road to Eastfield depot on 21st June 2018.
Groombridge: Carriage sidings now extend only a short distance west from the former Groombridge Junction on the Spa Valley Railway, but the line originally ran on to Ashurst Junction on the Uckfield line and then diverged westwards towards Three Bridges. In the left distance a Spa Valley train is on the approach to Groombridge station on 21st June 2018.
Mount Florida: 314202 at Mount Florida with a Neilston bound service on 21 June 2018.
Newtongrange: A mid-morning service on the Borders Railway pulls away from the platform at Newtongrange on 21 June 2018 on its way to Tweedbank. The train is the 0924 ex-Waverley, formed by ScotRail 158722. John Smart & Son, whose van is parked in the foreground, is involved in the conversion of the former Dean Oil Works building into an Apex Scotland community hub see image [[65898]].
Groombridge: Looking south at Groombridge Junction, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 'A' Class 0-6-0 52322 heads an eastbound Spa Valley service on the approach to Groombridge station on 21st June 2018.
Peebles [CR]: Sign still in place under the Tweed Bridge at Peebles in 2018.
Awe Crossing: An Oban-Glasgow train in the Pass of Brander above the west arm of Loch Awe. It has passed the site of Awe Crossing (roughly the left centre of the view with more pronounced trees) and is heading for Falls of Cruachan. The huge bulk of Ben Cruachan is to the right. Running along on the shelf built up along the hillside is possibly the most dramatic part of the line.
Inverkeithing East Junction: Colas 70806 slows for a signal check on the approach to Inverkeithing East Junction on 21 June 2019 with the Craiginches - Oxwellmains empties.
Falls of Cruachan: A late running Glasgow to Oban Sprinter above Loch Awe on the approach to Falls of Cruachan on 21st June 2019. The lower power lines more or less follow the course of the old Military Road, the original road here.
Falls of Cruachan: A sprinter approaches one of the rockfall signals at Cruachan on Loch Awe on 21st June 2019. The road below is on a section of bridge.
Inverhaggernie No 2 Level Crossing: The longest day allows a photograph of the southbound sleeper on the approach to Crianlarich. The sun has just set and the midges were out in force.
Erbusaig Bridge: We can imagine the reaction of the small fishing community of Erbusaig in the 1890s when the railway company told them what was going to happen to their view of the Isle of Skye and their access to the waters of the Inner Sound and Loch Carron. In this 21st June 2019 view, the bridge across the bay frames a severe crop of the original panorama as the last train of the day train for Inverness passes overhead.
Blencow: The abutments for the bridge at the east side of Blencow station are still in place but the deck was removed some time after the 1972 closure of the Keswick branch. Just behind the camera the old weighbridge hut for the coal yard still stands, and is still behind a huge pile of aggregate See image [[11766]]. 21st June 2019.
Awe Crossing: View west over the Pass of Brander to Loch Etive beyond. A sprinter makes its way along the tree lined track on 21st June 2019.
Blencow: Blencow station was actually just outside the village of Newbiggin but there was a station of that name not far away on the S&C and so Blencow was used, although that settlement is around two miles away. After closure in 1972 the trackbed and goods yard were turned over for business use, as seen here on 21st June 2019.
Falls of Cruachan: A westbound Sprinter has just left Falls of Cruachan on 21st June 2019 and is heading west for Oban. Below and to the right is the Cruachan Power Station visitors centre. Beinn a Bhuiridh is in the background.
Awe Crossing: The site of Awe crossing is pretty much impossible to see. There's not much to be seen from the roadside below. Perhaps more can be seen from the other side of the Pass of Brander where the thickening out of the line of trees for the former passing loop and combined signal box and house can be appreciated.
Awe Crossing: A westbound sprinter seen from the southern cliff tops in the Pass of Brander on 21st June 2019.
Fleetwood [3rd]: A late evening view of Fleetwood, across the Wyre Estuary from the Knott End slipway on 21st June 2020. From left to right are the lighthouse in Pharos St, the site of Fleetwood railway station, the Ferry terminal, the North Euston and the second lighthouse. The Knott End ferry service was suspended in March until further notice due to the corona virus. See image [[54371]] for a similar view at high tide.
Morningside Road: Mondays to Fridays, the 2105 Cross Country service from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh Waverley is, I believe, the only scheduled passenger train to use the Edinburgh suburban line and is booked to pass Craiglockhart Junction at 2204. On the longest day of the year, 21st June 2021, there was just enough light to catch the tail end of the train, formed of two Voyager units, as it passed through the remains of Morningside Road station. Anyone intending to use this train to get a trip round the 'Sub' should note that if it is running late it will be sent direct from Slateford to Waverley via Haymarket.
Melrose: The distinctive platform-level features of Melrose station are captured in this 21st June 2021 view from the west. The building was designed in 1846 by the renowned Scottish railway engineer, John Miller, and, as noted in the Disused Stations web site, 'looked more like a country mansion than a railway station'. See: http://disused-stations.org.uk/m/melrose/index.shtml

Tweedbank: 170426 arrives at platform 1, Tweedbank, with a service from Edinburgh on 21st June 2021. 170408 is spare in platform 2. In the background, the Borders Innovation Park takes shape.
Matlock: Looking North from Matlock station which is the terminus of the East Midlands Railway (Derwent Valley Line) from Derby towards the Peak Rail Heritage ralway to Rowsley.
Cromford: Immediately at the end of Cromford station platform is Willersley Tunnel which is 764 yards long.
Kirkland Yard: Rustons galore at the Fife Heritage Railway depot in Kirkland Yard! Former Rosyth Dockyard No.7 is flanked by Methil Power Station No.1 (with engine running) and No.2 on 21 June 2022.
Matlock: Is this the cheapest station to station ticket in the UK? Have I started a competition? Souvenir ticket purchased in Matlock Station on a day we couldn't travel due to a rail strike. Matlock is at the end of the East Midlands Railway service from Derby but carries on to Rowsley as Peak Rail heritage line.
Cromford: The sign on the old staion building says it all. Who thought 11 years later he would be King!!!!
Kirkland Yard: Former British Aluminium Co., Burntisland No.3 (Andrew Barclay 2046 of 1937) being restored cosmetically at Kirkland Yard depot. 21 June 2022

Kirkland Yard: Class 107 Derby Heavyweight DMCL SC52029, bought from the Gloucs-Warks Steam Railway, awaits attention by the Fife Heritage Railway in Kirkland Yard on 21st June 2022.
Caernarfon: The line from Menai Bridge Junction to Afon Wen closed in 1972 but in Caernarfon the trackbed continues to be used fairly extensively. The modern building on the right was completed in 2018 and is the northern terminus of the Welsh Highland Railway which has used the standard gauge route from Dinas since reopening in 1997. The tunnel which once carried the railway under the town towards Caernarvon station continues in use to carry road traffic.
Buxton Quarry: Theoretically not the actual Buxton quarry but Hillhead Quarry Buxton where this years Plant show was being held. The picture shows the railway running from middle left to bottom right, going over the bridge on Heath View Harpur Hill. The line continues to Tarmac's Hindlow Quarry and ends in Breedon (Buxton) Downlow Quarry, both have loading points. Going the opposite way the railway joins the main line in Buxton. The Quarry with the tall chimney in the middle distance isTarmacs Tunstead Quarry which now has a Carbon Neutral Cement Plant.
Bay Horse: On Day 1 of the RMT national rail strike on 21st June 2022 a few trains still ran. Between Lancaster and Preston during the day there were sixteen in total; eight freights and eight Avanti Pendolinos operating between Euston and Glasgow. This is DBC 66091, working containers from Mossend to Seaforth, passing through the cutting at Forton.
Cromford: The modern Cromford (Derwent Valley Line) station totem on the line from Derby to Matlock.
Cromford: The quaint station at Cromford on the East Midlands Railway (Derwent Valley Line). A wee bit of weed killer would make it look even more beautiful! The Station building on the left is now an office and still contains the original signal box, the footbridge and buildings on the right are private dwellings but the eejit on the bridge waving his arms didn't read the private property sign. Picture taken on the day of a rail strike so even more quiet.
Bay Horse: The National rail strike on 21st June 2022 meant that the Shap Harrisons to Tuebrook stone train, which usually runs in the night, operated during the afternoon. The loaded train is seen in Forton cutting behind celebrity GBRf 66794 in BR Railfreight grey livery. The train will be split at Tuebrook and tripped in two portions to the Edge Green terminal, on the old GCR Haydock branch near Golborne [[75977]].
Matlock: Modern station totem at the terminus of Matlock (Derwent Valley Line) on the line from Derby.
Matlock: Matlock, East Midlands Railway (Derwent Valley Line), looking towards Matlock Bath in June 2022. The line on the left is the terminus of the railway from Derby the line on the right is the terminus of the Peak Rail Heritage railway from Rowsley. The Station totem on the right platform is an original design on an original gas lamp post. The sign on the left is a modern design with EMR & Derwent Valley Railway.
