The original platforms on the world's first Underground, the Metropolitan Railway, opened in 1863 but this side of the station, on the north, was added in 1868 with the first stage of the Metropolitan Extension Railway and which diverges from the original line just to the east of the 1863 platforms. The extension station has two through platforms for trains to and from Aldgate plus two bays for short workings, this one on the west side and the other on the east. 1/21

28/11/2012
David Bosher

West Harrow

Harrow and Uxbridge Railway

The halt-like buildings to the south side platform at West Harrow station, on the LUL Metropolitan Line's Uxbridge branch, on a snowy 22nd January 2013. At this time, this entrance had no mechanical rottweilers (oops! sorry, I meant automatic ticket gates) so passengers were able to enter and exit without having their tickets checked. It is a long time since I've been to West Harrow so I am not sure if this is still the case. There is a new modern entrance on the north side that does have the barriers. The Harrow & Uxbridge Railway, an offshoot of the Metropolitan, was opened on 4th July 1904 but West Harrow station was not opened until 17th November 1913. So 10 months short of its centenary in this photo. 2/21

22/01/2013
David Bosher

Watford

Watford Branch (Metropolitan Railway and London and North Eastern Railway Joint)

Two trains of LUL S8 stock at Watford station, on 26th January 2013. Under long-standing plans to divert trains via a new link to the old Croxley Green branch, relay that to Watford High Street and run Metropolitan trains to Watford Junction, this station would be closed and the go-ahead for this was given but later cancelled before any work was done. Although this terminus is somewhat remote from Watford town centre, it serves a large residential catchment area so just as well it is staying open. 3/21

26/01/2013
David Bosher

Ruislip Manor

Harrow and Uxbridge Railway

LUL S8 stock on a Metropolitan Line service to Uxbridge departing from Ruislip Manor on 13th February 2013. The station is also served by the Piccadilly Line. 4/21

13/02/2013
David Bosher

Eastcote

Harrow and Uxbridge Railway

LUL S8 stock on a Metropolitan Line service from Uxbridge to Aldgate arriving at Eastcote on 13th February 2013. This ztfL station is also served by Chiltern Trains from Marylebone to Aylesbury Vale Parkway. When the East/West Rail is completed, Chiltern Trains will be extended to Milton Keynes Central via a reopened section of the old GCR main line and the Calvert spur on to the Oxford to Bletchley line (also to be reopened) at Claydon LNE Junction. Even with a change at Milton Keynes, the new route will provide Aylesbury again with a link to the Midlands and North which was lost when the GCR was closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts. 10/21

27/05/2013
David Bosher

Barbican

South Kensington Extension, Minories Extension (Metropolitan Railway)

LUL S8 stock on a short Hammersmith & City Line working to Moorgate departing from its penultimate stop at Barbican on a hot and sultry 13th July 2013. This station opened as Aldersgate Street in 1865 with the first extension of the world's first Underground, the Metropolitan Railway, from Farringdon Street (now Farringdon) to Moorgate Street (now Moorgate). It was renamed Aldersgate & Barbican in 1923 (although it was only ever shown on the LU diagram as Aldersgate) before being renamed simply Barbican in 1968. It once boasted a fine all-weather protection glass roof which was destroyed during the London 'Blitz' of World War Two. The frame was taken down in 1955 but it is still possible to see the support brackets above the arches on the walls. On the right are the disused Widened Lines platforms. For many years, this station was closed on Sundays but is now open full time again. 11/21

26/08/2013
David Bosher

Northwood Hills

Metropolitan Railway

LUL S8 stock train with a Metropolitan Line service to Baker Street arriving at Northwood Hills station, on 14th September 2013. 12/21

14/09/2013
David Bosher

Northwick Park

Kingsbury and Harrow Railway (Metropolitan Railway and Metropolitan and St John's Wood Railway Joint)

LU S8 stock on a Metropolitan Line service to Uxbridge, arriving at Northwick Park on 26th September 2015. This line was opened by the Metropolitan on 2nd August 1880, but there was no station here until Preston Road for Oxendon Halt was opened, on the opposite side of the road bridge in the background, on 21st May 1908. It was resited during 1931/32, the south side of the island coming into use on 22nd November 1931 and the north on 3rd January 1932. Presumably, between those two dates, southbound trains continued to serve the 1908 halt of which no trace remains. 15/21

31/12/2022
David Bosher

Harrow-on-the-Hill (Met)

Harrow and Rickmansworth Railway

Harrow-on-the-Hill, Metropolitan Line, looking north with a Watford train of LU S8 stock waiting to depart in pouring rain on 31st December 2022. From 15th March 1899, the Great Central also served here from Marylebone with the station rebuilt in its present form by the LPTB in 1938. The residual service on the GCR, following its senseless closure north of Aylesbury in 1966, is now part of the National Rail Chiltern Line but the station is still wholly owned by Transport for London. 16/21

31/12/2022
David Bosher

Harrow-on-the-Hill (Met)

Harrow and Rickmansworth Railway

Two different ways of displaying Harrow-on-the-Hill on LU roundels, as seen here on 31st December 2022.
