Aberdeen Corporation Gas Department

Introduction

This street tramway connected the Aberdeen Harbour Trustees Tramway, which connected with the railway network, to the Aberdeen Gas Works allowing coal to be delivered to the works. The line also served the Sandislands Chemical Works.

This line is divided into a number of portions.


Waterloo Quay to Gas Works

This quay is on the north side of the Victoria Dock and refers to the east end. Quayside tramlines from Aberdeen Waterloo served the quayside and there were goods sheds at either end of the quay. To the west is Aberdeen Regent Quay.

This gas works was started in 1840 and transferred to the town corporation around 1870. The Aberdeen Corporation Gas Department was transferred to the Scottish Gas Board in 1949.

Aberdeen Parks

After closure of the gasworks line the locomotive 'Mr Therm' was displayed in public parks: first Duthie Park and currently Seaton Park.
