This gas works was started in 1840 and transferred to the town corporation around 1870. The Aberdeen Corporation Gas Department was transferred to the Scottish Gas Board in 1949.
This was a large site and rail served from the Aberdeen Harbour Trustees Tramway which was connected to the railway network at both Aberdeen Waterloo and Aberdeen Guild Street. There was a narrow gauge line within the works.
The works had several locomotives over the years, notably 'Mr Therm' an 0-4-0ST built by Andrew Barclay.
The line to the gasworks closed in 1972, but was partly retained to serve the nearby Scottish Agricultural Industries Ltd site, the Sandislands Chemical Works.
Mr Therm was stored at Ferryhill MPD in 1972 before being displayed in Duthie Park, Aberdeen. The locomotive is now at Seaton Park in the north of Aberdeen.
