Great North of England Railway

Introduction

This line is still open. This railway ran York to Darlington. The original intention was for the line to run from York to Newcastle. It became part of the North Eastern Railway.

Act for line between Redhaugh Quay, Gateshead, and Croft, Darlington and on to York.

Line opened from York to Darlington. The Darlington to Newcastle powers are transferred to the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway.
05/10/1841Great North of England Railway
Powers from Darlington to Gateshead relinquished to Robert Davies, James Richardson and John Hotham of York acting on behalf of the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway.
02/01/1842Railway Clearing House
The Railway Clearing House is established. Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway, Great North of England Railway, Hull and Selby Railway, Leeds and Selby Railway, London and Birmingham Railway, Manchester and Leeds Railway, Midland Counties Railway, North Midland Railway and York and North Midland Railway join.
11/04/1843Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway
Darlington to Gateshead section of the Great North of England Railway formally handed over in Act of Parliament.
19/06/1844Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway
Line opened, with engines and rolling stock provided by the Great North of England Railway.

Notifies the Great North of England Railway that it will take over its own operation.
21/07/1845Leeds and Thirsk Railway
Company incorporated, line receives act; Leeds to Thirsk with two branches to the Leeds and Bradford Railway one at Bramley and one at Holbeck, one curve to the Great North of England Railway at Thirsk, and two short branches to Harrogate and Knaresborough.
