Act passed for line from Moorsley, by Houghton-le-Spring, to Hartlepool and for construction of a dock at Hartlepool. Branches from Shotton to Ittington (Littletown branch), Shadforth to Thornley, and Castle Eden to Cassop were included. Not all lines were built as planned.
16/06/1834Hartlepool Dock and Railway
City of Durham branch authorised from Pittington branch at Ludworth to Gilsgate by Durham. Line not built.
16/06/1834Durham Junction Railway
Act passed. Intended to connect to the (never built) Durham branch of the Hartlepool Dock and Railway and run north to Gateshead. As a result the line terminated at Rainton Meadows instead of running through to Gillesgate.
13/08/1834Durham and Sunderland Railway
Act passed. Intended to connect to the (never built) Durham branch of the Hartlepool Dock and Railway and run north east to Sunderland.
01/01/1835Hartlepool Dock and Railway
Thornley branch reaches Thornley.
23/11/1835Hartlepool Dock and Railway
Hartlepool to Haswell opened. Line to Moorsley not completed. Littletown branch terminated between Thornley and Ludworth.
30/08/1836Durham and Sunderland Railway
Opened from South Dock (Sunderland) to Haswell. Initially no connection made to Hartlepool Dock and Railway at Haswell.
18/03/1839Hartlepool Dock and Railway
Cassop branch partly opened although rest of line partly prepared.
  /05/1839Stockton and Hartlepool Railway
Construction begins without Act. Line built to extend Clarence Railway to the better Victoria Dock [Hartlepool] of the Hartlepool Dock and Railway. Port Clarence was tidal.
22/07/1848Hartlepool Dock and Railway Great North of England, Clarence and Hartlepool Junction Railway
Both companies leased by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway at George Hudson's instruction.

Following a North Eastern Railway study of Sunderland to Hartlepool services a connection at Haswell, alterations at Seaton and Murton and a new staton for Sunderland are recommended.

Rope worked Hesleden Bank re-laid on easier gradient for locomotives.

Sunderland to West Hartlepool service via Haswell withdrawn.

Hartlepool to West Hartlepool line closed to school trains.

This was a two platform, later expanded to four when the North Eastern Railway's line from Cemetery North Junction [2nd] opened to Seaton. The junction between the two lines was not at the station itself, but much closer to Hartlepool at Cemetery North Junction [2nd].
