Langholm Branch (North British Railway)

Introduction

This branch line is closed. The railway ran north from Riddings Junction to Langholm. Largely a passenger line it also served Canonbie Colliery.

This was the junction between the Waverley Route and the branch to Langholm. It was a three platform station, two main line platforms and the main northbound was an island whose second face, on west side of the station, served the branch.

This is a disused single track eight arch viaduct over the Liddel Water. It is on a gentle curve away from the former Riddings Junction. The viaduct is 480 yards long and 60 ft high.

This signal box was south of Canonbie station at the start of the short branch to Canonbie Colliery. The box was on the west side of the line. Access to the colliery was from the north via a reversing spur on the east side of the line, running south from the box.

This was a single platform station. The platform was on the east side of the line. The goods yard was to the south, accessed from Canonbie Colliery Signal Box. The station closed to passengers in 1964 and the line remained open until 1967 for goods.

This siding was approached from the north and was located on the east side of the line immediately south of Tarras Viaduct. It served Tarrasfoot Tile Works and Glen Tarras Distillery which was off to the east.

This terminus was a single platform station, with a loop south of the platform. The station building was of two storeys with a small timber trainshed over the platform, a locomotive shed on the east side and goods yard with goods shed on the west side. The signal box (1894) was at the south end of the station on the east side of the line.
