This branch extended the Stockton and Darlington Railway from Stockton to deeper water and larger dock facilities at Middlesbrough. Old Newport Yard was the eastern end of the electrified route from Shildon Yard. The original course of the line was replaced with an alignment to the south when Tees Marshalling Yard opened, the southern alignment being followed by passenger services. The original course became a goods line. Middlesbrough station it at the east end, built on a new alignment opened as part of the Middlesbrough and Redcar Railway.
This line is divided into a number of portions.
This is a two platform station. The main station building is on the westbound platform. The platforms are canopied. On the south side of the line and to the west of the station is the signal box, and at the east end several carriage sidings.
