This branch extended the Ballochney Railway to several collieries north east of Airdrie. One was extended by the Slamannan Railway and carried a passenger service.

This line is divided into a number of portions.
This station, with staggered platforms, was on a double track section of the Ballochney Railway. It replaced Arbuckle station which was to the north east. To the south west was Ballochney Junction.

This junction, also known as Arden Junction, was the junction between the Ballochney Railway (of 1828) and the Slamannan Railway (opened 1840). Here the Slamannan joined a mineral branch dating from 1830 of the Ballochney which ran from Whiterigg to Arden to serve various pits - the Whiterigg, Stanrigg, Arbuckle, Arden Branch (Ballochney Railway).

Stanrigg and Arbuckle Pit was owned by McCracken Bros and consisted of Arbuckle No 2 Pit (upcast), a downcast shaft and Stanrigg No 2 Pit (coal extraction). To the north was Stanrigg No 1 Pit on the Slamannan Railway.
