This section of the Down line at Burntisland (photographed in June 1984) was bidrectional to allow access to the former alumina plant, hence the signal on the wrong side: a fixed distant. At the other side of the station the full MAS signal, controlling access to the main line from the long-disused docks sidings, was removed only in July 2008, after about 20 years continuously showing danger. The crossover to the facing Down line is also long severed, so why the signal was maintained all that time is something of a mystery.
