For many years there was an hourly stopping service from Edinburgh to Markinch during the day. In December 2008 this was cut back to Kirkcaldy with new hourly services to Perth and to Dundee taking over
the Markinch stops from these and Aberdeen services. Termination at Kirkcaldy lasted only a few months when from May 2009 these services were extended to Glenrothes with Thornton (only) giving it an extra
train to and from Edinburgh via Kirkcaldy, supplementing the hourly circle. At the bi-directional Platform 1 at Glenrothes a 158 waits to depart with such a service on 22 August.
