The back of a pocket timetable valid from 18 Jun 1962. 1s 4d return, valid all day, for the three-and-a-half miles from Waverley to Joppa. 1s 4d equals 7p. There's no meaningful way of arriving at today's equivalent of past prices, whatever you are led to believe. Cheap though it seems most people still preferred the bus and the station closed in 1964 as did Portobello. Note the income-dependent season ticket rates for 16 to 18 year olds. It would be unthinkable today, and hard to police then; what if you suddenly got a better-paid job, or left education?
