Bonnington Viaduct [CR]

Looking like the remains of a long abandoned ski-jump, the high level bridge abutment at the bottom of Gosford Place, seen here on 18 July 2009, stands as a memorial to the Caledonian Railway's 'Leith New Lines'. Inspired by the opening of Leith's 54 acre Edinburgh Dock in 1881 the route from Newhaven Junction was opened in 1903, having reached its goal via all manner of urban embankents, viaducts and bridges. Neither the original plans nor the projected traffic were ever realised, three partially completed passenger stations were never opened and the route was singled after 14 years. Closure between Newhaven and Leith Walk came in January 1966. The photograph is taken from the trackbed of the North Leith branch just west of the former Bonnington station. See image 28071
