Peebles CR and NBR Junction
South end of the historic Tweed Bridge in Peebles, looking west in 2012 with the River off to the right. The old bridge is based around a structure dating from the 15th century. It was largely rebuilt in 1663, extended in 1799, widened in 1834 - and again in 1900. Between the two widening projects, along came the railway in 1864 and smashed a hole through it - as above. This enabled a rail link to be built from the Caledonian terminus at Peebles West, along the south bank of the river, eventually bridging it to join the NB on the north side. The link line closed in 1959 and this section of the trackbed is now part of a riverside walkway. For the view east from the bridge see image 6051.
