Like many other contemporary railways the Bridge of Gairn Tramway, a Standard Gauge line, used gravel as ballast. A gravel ballast pit is shown on this 1900 map, close to to the River Dee and the Craigendarroch Lodge (later Hotel). Completed around 1870, the tramway does not ever seem to have been used for the goods-only transport it was intended. Added by Charlie Niven.
