This locomotive tramway extended the Aboyne and Braemar Railway from Ballater to Bridge of Gairn. Construction was in 1868. It was built, with permission to only carry goods, under the provisions of Statutes 28&29 Victoriae 1865 cclxxix 'An Act for making a Railway from the Deeside Railway Extension at Charleston of Aboyne to the Bridge of Gairn, to be called "The Aboyne and Braemar Railway."' The trackbed remains largely intact and can be, at least in part, walked.
This line is divided into a number of portions.
This was the terminus of the Deeside line from Aberdeen. The terminus was at the Station Square in the middle of Ballater. The building was burned down in 2015 but had been, despite the closure of the station, been rebuilt. The resulting rebuilt building is superb. More detailsAfter opening of the Aboyne and Braemar Railway to Ballater a start was made on taking the line further west as a goods tramway to Bridge of Gairn, with work completed around 1869. It did not open, but was used as the route for the pipeline of the Ballater water supply.
