After opening of the Aboyne and Braemar Railway to Ballater a start was made on taking the line further west as a goods tramway to Bridge of Gairn, with work completed around 1869. It did not open, but was used as the route for the pipeline of the Ballater water supply.
The line was not taken as far west as Braemar, although a Great North of Scotland Railway bus terminus was opened there.
