Whelley Viaduct

Despite having twelve brick arches and seven steel spans the Whelley Viaduct is known locally as Twenty Bridges. It took the Whelley Loop across the Douglas Valley to link back into the WCML at Standish but closed to diverted passenger trains when electrification was completed around 1973, and to goods in 1976. It is an impressive structure but closed off and crumbling in places.
