The original station at Dumfries was built as a terminus for the line from Carlisle. When the line extended north a new station was built opposite the shed which was later replaced by the current station. The original site quickly became an industrial hive with various goods facilities built as seen in image 77033. Part of the site is still used by ScotRail to stable 156s overnight and by Network Rail to stable track machines but the majority of the site has been taken over by commercial units.
